Spring Decorative Arts Auction - May 16
Treadway is pleased to announce their May 16th, 20th Century Decorative Arts auction in Cincinnati. This 400 lot sale includes ceramics, lighting, textiles, glass and fine art spanning multiple movements. This sale consists of property from 3 Ohio collectors, a Florida and California collection and two collections from New York.
Fine art features a Gertrude Abercrombie oil on board from a Midwest collection estimated at $10,000 to $20,000, a drawing by Thomas Hart Benton at $5,000 to $7,000, as well as graphics by David Klein, Andy Warhol, Paul Gaugin, Edwin Deming, Albrecht Durer, Toulouse-Lautrec, Marie Laurencin, Marc Chagall, Marino Marini, Odilon, Redon, Karl Priebe, Betye Saar, Paul Signac, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Willard Smythe, Jean Miro, Roy Steinberg, Leonor Fini, Eugene Grasset, Alphonse Mucha, Paul Berthon, E T Hurley, Charles Todd and Louis John Rhead. Oils by Carl Rawson, Dale Nichols, Adolph Shulz and a Chicago street scene by Aaron Bohrod fill out the fine art being sold in the sale.
Art Nouveau European glass is being sold, including an exceptional collection of Loetz, as well as pieces by Daum, Galle, Muller, Rene Lalique, and Burgun & Schverer. A large and impressive Daum lamp is also available, along with a rare and extremely fine Loetz lamp. American Art Nouveau glass in this auction includes works by Louis C. Tiffany and Steuben. Several Tiffany Studios lamps are included as well as their metalwork including various desirable picture frames. Some outstanding lamps include Handels, a rare Pairpoint with glass base and shade with nautical scene and one of the finest Jefferson reverse painted lamps available. A Unique wisteria lamp is being offered and its as nice an example of that model that you will find.
The sale features several pieces of Arts and Crafts metal by Gertrude Twichell, William Snelling Hadway, Heintz, Mildred Watkins, Liberty and Co., Roycroft, William Hutton, Ludwig, Vierthaler, Potter and Mellon, E.T. Hurley, and Jarvie. A large and varied selection of textiles round out the Arts and Crafts examples. Modern ceramics and furnishings include Doyle Lane, Alexander Calder, Willard Smythe, Jean Miro, Roy Steinberg, Leonor Fini, Val and Harry Bertoia, Orrefors, Dunbar, Venini, Harris Strong, Michael Elkan, Antonio Prieto, Paul Frankl, Tapio Wirkkala, Klaus Moje, Royal Copenhagen, Verner Patton, Frank Gehry, Fornasetti, Russell Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, William Katavolos, Gambone, and Toshiko Takaezu.
Lighting features a Unique Wisteria Lamp, expected to bring $8,000 to $11,000, as well as a nautical Daum lamp for $6,000 to $8,000. A number of Handel lamps along with a nicely executed Jefferson lamp are also being offered.
A monumental Rookwood vase by Carl Schmidt is estimated to bring $25,000 to $35,000, along with a number of other decorative Arts & Crafts examples from Rookwood as well as early Cincinnati pottery by Matt Morgan, Cincinnati Pottery Club and T J Wheatley. Other Ohio pottery examples include pieces of Roseville, Weller, Clewell and Owens.
A Netsuke Erotica collection rounds out the selection of offerings.
